How the evening runs

Vancouver keeps early hours. Dinner is usually between 6.30 and 8.30pm, and outside the downtown core many kitchens close before ten. The city dresses down — good outdoor clothes pass almost anywhere, and a jacket is rarely expected. Its real appeal is how close the water and the mountains sit to the centre: an afternoon on the seawall or a walk in Stanley Park is an ordinary plan, and the North Shore mountains are the normal backdrop to a conversation.

Getting around

The SkyTrain is driverless and quick and links downtown with Richmond and the airport; the SeaBus crosses the harbour to North Vancouver in about twelve minutes; small passenger ferries hop across False Creek to Granville Island. Downtown and Yaletown are easy on foot, and the seawall runs unbroken around Stanley Park and along much of the waterfront. Trains stop running around 1am, so a late evening ends in a car.

When Vancouver is busiest

The wet season runs roughly from October to March, when rain is frequent but rarely heavy and the city simply carries on in waterproofs. Summer is the dry, bright season and the busiest — the beaches at English Bay and Kitsilano fill, and the fireworks over English Bay in late July and early August draw the largest crowds of the year. In winter the ski hills of the North Shore are within an hour of downtown, which makes this one of the few cities where a morning in the snow and a city dinner fit into the same day.

Questions about Vancouver

Which neighbourhood suits a first meeting?

Gastown or Kitsilano. Gastown is central, walkable and full of places to sit; Kitsilano is calmer, beside the beach and good for a walk afterwards. Both avoid the busiest stretches of downtown.

Does the rain spoil plans?

Rarely. Winter rain here is steady rather than dramatic and the city is used to it — covered markets, galleries and long lunches carry the day, and the seawall is still walkable in a good coat. Summer, by contrast, is reliably dry.

Is an outdoor day realistic?

More than in most cities. The seawall, Stanley Park and the beaches are minutes from downtown, and the North Shore trails are a short trip across the water. Tell us if you would like an active day, so the plan and the clothing match.
