Where to meet in Bali

  • Seminyak
  • Canggu
  • Ubud
  • Sanur

How the evening runs

Bali's day turns on sunset, which falls a little after six all year. On the west coast, Seminyak and Canggu fill for the last hour of light, and dinner follows from around seven. Ubud, inland among the rice terraces, keeps earlier and quieter hours. Light, casual clothes are right almost everywhere, but temples require a sarong and sash and covered shoulders, and ceremonies happen often enough that a procession closing a road is part of an ordinary day rather than an event.

Getting around

There is no railway and very little public transport, so the island moves on scooters and cars. For a day out, a car with a driver booked for the whole day is the usual answer, and far more relaxed than hailing rides between stops. Distances are short on the map and long on the road: Seminyak to Ubud can take an hour or well over it, and the narrow lanes around Canggu jam in the late afternoon. Ride-hailing apps work in many areas but not all, because some villages reserve pickups for local drivers.

When Bali is busiest

The dry season runs roughly from April to October and is the busiest time of year, peaking in July and August. The wet season, November to March, brings heavy afternoon downpours that soon pass, greener landscapes and quieter beaches. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, usually falls in March and closes the whole island for twenty-four hours — the airport shuts, nobody goes out and lights stay low — so every plan works around it. The night before, the ogoh-ogoh parades make it one of the liveliest evenings of the year.

Questions about Bali

Which part of Bali suits a first meeting?

Seminyak or Sanur. Seminyak is lively, with plenty of places to sit by the beach for sunset; Sanur is calmer, with a long paved beachfront path that suits walking and talking. Ubud is lovely but an hour inland, and better as a day plan than a first coffee.

Is a day in Ubud realistic?

Yes, with a driver and an early start. The rice terraces, the temples and the town's cafes fill a whole day comfortably, and leaving before the late-afternoon traffic makes the return far easier. It is the island's classic day out.

What should I know about Nyepi?

It is a full day of silence across the island, usually in March. Nobody may be out on the streets, businesses close and the airport stops for twenty-four hours, so nothing can be booked that day. The evening before, the ogoh-ogoh parades are worth seeing.
