How the evening runs

Sydney eats early and outdoors whenever it can. Dinner is usually booked between 7 and 8.30pm, and on a warm evening the table is as likely to be on a terrace or by the water as inside. Dress is relaxed — smart-casual covers almost every room in the city — and the harbour does much of the work a dramatic venue would do elsewhere. Weekends start in daylight: a long breakfast, a coastal walk or a ferry across the harbour is an ordinary first plan here rather than an unusual one.

Getting around

Trains, the metro, light rail, buses and ferries all take the same Opal card or a contactless bank card, so there is nothing to buy in advance. The ferries from Circular Quay are transport rather than a tourist trip — Manly is around half an hour across the harbour, and the view is the reason people choose it. The city is spread out, and the eastern suburbs and the inner west are a real journey apart, so a first meeting is best kept to one side. Late at night the trains thin out and NightRide buses take over some routes, so the last leg is often a car.

When Sydney is busiest

December to February is summer: long light evenings, the beaches at their busiest, and New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour as the most crowded night of the year. Late May into June brings Vivid, when the city's buildings are lit and the foreshore fills after dark. Spring and autumn are the easiest months to plan around — warm, settled and less crowded. Winter is mild by most standards, but evenings near the water turn cool quickly, so an outdoor plan wants a layer.

Questions about Sydney

Which part of Sydney suits a first meeting?

Surry Hills or Paddington. Both are walkable, full of small places to sit and calm enough to talk, without the crowds around Circular Quay. Potts Point works well if the evening is going to end with a walk by the water.

Is a harbour ferry a reasonable plan?

Yes, and one of the easiest in the city. The ride to Manly takes about half an hour, costs the same as any other fare and gives the conversation something to look at. Mention it when you enquire so the timing is planned around the return trip.

Does the summer heat change anything?

Mostly the hour. Midday in January can be fierce and the beaches are crowded on any warm weekend, so summer plans lean towards the morning and the evening. A southerly change can drop the temperature sharply in an afternoon, which is worth a light layer in the bag.
