How the evening runs
Melbourne takes its coffee and its food seriously and its dress code lightly — black is the city's unofficial colour, and smart-casual is enough almost everywhere. Dinner is usually between 7 and 9pm. Much of the centre's character sits in its laneways and arcades, where small places stack up side by side, so an evening often moves on foot from one to the next rather than staying at a single table. A long weekend brunch is as much a social occasion here as dinner is.
Getting around
Melbourne's tram network is one of the largest in the world, and inside the Free Tram Zone in the centre the trams cost nothing at all. The city centre is laid out on a grid that makes walking simple, and the inner suburbs — Fitzroy, Carlton, South Yarra — are a short tram ride out. St Kilda sits on the bay, about half an hour south of the centre by tram, and a walk along its foreshore at sunset is one of the city's easiest plans.
When Melbourne is busiest
Melbourne's weather is famous for changing several times in one day, and a layer belongs in every plan. Summer brings the Australian Open in January, and spring carries the racing carnival, with the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November a public holiday across the city. Autumn — March to May — is settled and mild and hosts the comedy festival. Winter is cool, grey and indoor, and it is football season, which fills the stadiums every weekend until the Grand Final at the end of September.

Questions about Melbourne
Which part of Melbourne suits a first meeting?
Fitzroy or Carlton. Both are a short tram ride from the centre, full of cafes and bookshops, and calm enough for a conversation. The laneways in the city centre are wonderful but crowded at lunchtime, and better for a second coffee than a first.
How do I plan around the weather?
Assume it will change. A warm morning can turn cold and wet by the afternoon, so an indoor fallback — a gallery, a covered arcade, a long lunch — is worth having in mind. Locals carry a layer all year for exactly this reason.
What happens on Melbourne Cup day?
The city takes the day off. The first Tuesday in November is a public holiday here, the dress code at the races is formal, and many people host or attend parties. If you would like company for a race-day event, mention the dress code when you enquire.
