How the evening runs

Cape Town lives outdoors in summer and around the table in winter. Dinner is usually between 7 and 9pm, and on a summer evening the light lasts long enough for a sundowner first — watching the sun drop into the Atlantic from Camps Bay or Signal Hill is a local ritual rather than a tourist one. Dress is relaxed and outdoorsy. Wine country is close, and a long lunch in the winelands is as common a plan here as dinner is elsewhere.

Getting around

Ride-hailing is the usual way around, and door to door after dark is the standard advice for visitors and residents alike. The MyCiTi buses run along the Atlantic seaboard and into the centre. The Sea Point promenade is the best long walk in the city, flat and busy with people from early morning. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are roughly an hour's drive away, so a winelands day needs a driver rather than a train.

When Cape Town is busiest

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: dry, warm summers from November to March and a cooler, rainy winter from June to August. December and January are the busiest weeks of the year, when much of the country takes its summer holiday. Summer also brings the south-easter, a strong wind locals call the Cape Doctor, which can close the cableway up Table Mountain at short notice. Winter is quieter and green, and a clear winter day is among the best the city has.

Questions about Cape Town

Which part of Cape Town suits a first meeting?

The V&A Waterfront or Sea Point. The Waterfront is busy, well lit and easy to reach; Sea Point has the promenade, which makes a walk part of the plan. Both are simple to arrange door to door.

Is Table Mountain a reasonable plan?

On a clear, calm day, yes — the cableway takes a few minutes and the views are extraordinary. Wind closes it at short notice, so it is best kept as the flexible part of a day rather than the fixed one. Check the cableway's status that morning.

Is a winelands day realistic?

Yes, with a driver. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are around an hour away, and a long lunch there is one of the region's best days out. Mention it when you enquire so the day is planned around the drive.
