How the evening runs
San Francisco eats early — dinner is usually booked between 6.30 and 8.30pm — and the evening is relaxed rather than late. Dress is casual, a habit the tech industry made universal, and layers matter more than style: fog rolls in off the ocean on summer afternoons and the temperature can drop sharply from one neighbourhood to the next. The city is compact and best seen at walking pace, so an evening often moves between two or three places within a few streets.
Getting around
Muni buses, streetcars and the historic cable cars cover the city, and BART runs underground through downtown and across the bay; a Clipper card or a phone pays for all of them. The hills are steep enough to shape a route — what looks like a short walk on the map can be a climb — so a first meeting is easiest inside one of the flatter neighbourhoods. Ferries from the Ferry Building cross to Sausalito and the East Bay, and BART stops running around midnight.
When San Francisco is busiest
The warmest, clearest weeks usually come in September and October, when the summer fog finally lifts, and Fleet Week in October fills the waterfront with air shows. Summer itself is often cool and grey near the ocean, which surprises visitors every year. Winter brings most of the rain, between November and March, but stays mild. The August music festival in Golden Gate Park makes that one of the city's busiest weekends.

Questions about San Francisco
Which neighbourhood suits a first meeting?
Hayes Valley or North Beach. Both are flat by local standards, walkable and full of cafes, and calm enough to talk. The Mission is livelier and usually sunnier, which makes it a good choice for an afternoon.
What should I wear?
Layers, at any time of year. A sunny afternoon in one neighbourhood can be cold and foggy a mile away, and evenings are cool even in summer. Casual is the norm almost everywhere; mention it if you are going somewhere formal and we will match.
Is crossing the bay a realistic plan?
Yes. The ferry to Sausalito takes about half an hour and is one of the most pleasant journeys in the region, with the Golden Gate Bridge and the skyline in view on the way back. Check the last return before you go.
