How the evening runs

Johannesburg is a business city with a strong social life, and its evenings start earlier than visitors expect — dinner from around 7pm, and many places quiet by eleven on a weeknight. Much of the social life happens in the neighbourhoods rather than downtown: Parkhurst's high street, Rosebank and the precinct at Melrose Arch. The city sits high on the Highveld, so evenings are cool for much of the year even after a warm day. Smart-casual is the norm, a little smarter in Sandton.

Getting around

This is a driving city, and ride-hailing is the standard way to move between neighbourhoods, door to door, especially after dark. The Gautrain is the exception: a fast rail link between Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and OR Tambo airport, clean and reliable, though it does not run late into the night. Inside Rosebank or Melrose Arch you can walk comfortably; between neighbourhoods, plan on a car.

When Johannesburg is busiest

Summer, from October to March, brings warm days and short, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that roll in and clear within the hour. Winter, from June to August, is dry and sunny by day with cold nights and the occasional frost. In October the jacarandas flower across the northern suburbs and turn whole streets purple. December is quieter than you might expect, because many residents leave for the coast.

Questions about Johannesburg

Which neighbourhood suits a first meeting?

Rosebank or Parkhurst. Rosebank has a Gautrain station and plenty of places to sit; Parkhurst's high street is lined with small restaurants and cafes and feels like a village. Both are easy to reach by car and to leave the same way.

Is a weekend market a good plan?

Yes. Weekend markets are a big part of the city's social life — food, design and music in the open air — and they make an easy, public daytime first meeting. Mention it when you enquire so the timing suits.

How do the summer storms affect plans?

Afternoon thunderstorms are common from October to March; they arrive fast, fall heavily and usually pass within the hour. An indoor fallback for the late afternoon keeps the plan intact, and the evening that follows is usually clear and cool.
